Question 614887: I found this question in an Algebra test but I'm not sure if there is enough information, the possible answers were 2.25 km, 3.25 km, 11.25 km and 16.25 km. This is the problem:
"A family makes a 43.25 km trip in 5.5 hours. On the first part of the trip they crossed a lake in a canoe paddling at 12 km/h. For the rest of the trip, they hiked on a scenic trail. If their average walking speed was 5 km/h, how far did they walk?"
Thanks.

I'm not sure if there is enough information, the possible answers were 2.25 km, 3.25 km, 11.25 km and 16.25 km. This is the problem:
-------------------------------------------------
"A family makes a 43.25 km trip in 5.5 hours. On the first part of the trip they crossed a lake in a canoe paddling at 12 km/h. For the rest of the trip, they hiked on a scenic trail. If their average walking speed was 5 km/h, how far did they walk?"
-------------
Paddling DATA:
rate = 12 km/hr ; distance = x km ; time = x/12 hr
----------------------
Hiking DATA:
rate = 5 km/hr ; distance = 43.25-x ; time = (43.25-x)/5 hr
-----
Equation:
time + time = 5.5 hrs
----
x/12 + (43.25-x)/5 = 5.5
----
Multiply thru by 12*5 to get:
5x + 12*(43.25-x) = 5*12*5.5
--------
5x + 519 - 12x = 330
-7x = -189
x = 27 km (paddling distance)
---
43.25-27 = 16.25 km (hiking distance)
