Question 591205: Hi, This a a question for my assessment.
A new excavation site fits a parabola with the equation y = x squared + 11x + 10
The hole must be more than 10 metres wide across the top for a bobcat to be able to dig it.
If the ground level is taken as the x-axis, is the hole able to be dug by a bobcat?
Use Mathematical procedures to explain why or why not
Thankyou

Answer by nerdybill(7384)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
At "ground level" x is equal to zero.
Set x = 0 and solve for y:
y = x squared + 11x + 10
0 = x^2 + 11x + 10
0 = (x+10)(x+1)
x = {-10, -1}
the "distance" between the two points is 9 units
we must conclude that the answer is NO
