Question 56689: How would you get the Average number Days Late out of the formula listed below. The chart was done in an excel spreadsheet.
=(E8*4)+(E8*5)+(F8*6)+(H8*7))/(D8+E8+F8+G8+H8)
The letters represent days, but why would you use the same day twice and why do you multiply by 4, then 5, then 6, then 7. If the formula is supposed to be for the AVERAGE Number of Days Late, wouldnt you just take the number of days like 3 and divided it into 10? If you can help explain this, i would be more than grateful. Thank you.

=(E8*4)+(E8*5)+(F8*6)+(H8*7))/(D8+E8+F8+G8+H8)
I am assuming that there is an error and one of the E8's is really supposed to be a D8 or a G8.
The first E8 show the number of people who were 4 days late. The total number of days late will be E8 times 4.(if E8 was 7 then 7 people have been late 4 days each for a total of 7 x 4 = 28 days of lateness).
As written the formula shows that people were either 4, 5 6 or 7 days late. The top of the division therefore works out how many days of lateness each group of people is responsible for and then adds them to get the total late days. The formula on the bottom tallies how many people were in the study. The D8 group have not been late at all so they do not appear on the top of the formula.
To demonstrate this consider the following problem.
4 people have not been late, 3 people have been late 5 on days and 2 people have been late on 6 days. The three people are responsible for (3 x 5 =) 15 late days and the two people have been responsible for (2 x 6 =) 12 late days so there have been 27 late days in total. Add all the people up to get 9 and divide that into the 27 late days. The average number of late days per person is 3.
