An 18-foot wire is to be cut so that the longer piece is 5 times longer than the shorter piece. Find the length of each piece.
-------------
Let the shorter piece be "x".
The longer piece is "5x".
----
Equation:
x + 5x = 18 ft
6x = 18 ft
x = 3 ft (shorter)
5x = 15 ft (shorter)
