I think you want to find the lowest possible score you can get on one of three tests and still average 87...?

If this is the case, I'll restrict the possible test scores to [0, 100]. The lowest possible score can be obtained when the other two scores are 100. Hence,

(100 + 100 + x)/3 = 87 --> 200 + x = 261 --> x = 61. Therefore, it is possible to get a 61 and still average 87.
