Write an equation for each statement: t=test grade, q=quiz grade
:
"If Herman's test grade and quiz grade are equally weighted, his average is 85."
= 85
Multiply by 2
t + q = 170
:
"If the test counts 3 times as much as the quiz average 83."
= 83
Multiply by 4
3t + q = 332
:
Use elimination, subtract the 1st equation from the above equation
3t + q = 332
t + q = 170
--------------Subtraction eliminates q, find t
2t = 162
t =
t = 81 is the test grade
