if the two lowest scores, 34 & 48 are removed the average is 83.
How many students are in the algebra class?
:
Let x = no. of students in the algebra class
then
(x-2) = no. of students that had an average of 83
:
= 80
Mult by x
83(x-2) + 34 + 48 = 80x
:
83x - 166 + 34 + 48 = 80x

83x - 84 = 80x
:
83x - 80x = 84
:
3x = 84
x =
x = 28 students originally
