then
(78+x+100)/3 = 84
78+x+100 = 252
x+178 = 252

On three tests, each graded on a scale of 0 to 100, Jim had average score of 78. If Jim pulls his average up to 84 after taking two additional tests, what is the lowest possible score he could have received on one of the last two tests?

Since his average after 3 tests was 78, then his total score on all 3 tests is 234 (3 * 78)

Since his average after 5 tests is 84, then his total score on all 5 tests is 420 (5 * 84)

This means that the total score for the last 2 tests was 186 (420 - 234).

Now, since his total score on last 2 tests is 186, and he cannot get more than 100 on any one test, then the least he could have gotten on any of the last 2 tests is (186 - 100).
