2/3 + 3/10 = 11/30 then that minus 2/5? When I did it on an online math calculator, it said the answer is 17/30. I don't understand how that can be?

Whenever you have fractions, you need a common denominator.
In this case 30 will work. It's also the least common denominator.
Convert each to a fraction with a denominator of 30.
