Question 258015: I have to solve this by using elimination. I think my answer is wrong because when I entered my numbers in for the variables it didn't work out.

Elimation: x + y = 7
2x - y = 2
I ended up with (11, -4)
It doesn't completely work out when I do the checking.
Please let me know where I went wrong.

Hello,
Let's see if I can help you.
x + y = 7
2x - y = 2
We can add both of these which will give us:
3x=9 Now divide both sides by 3 to give us:
x=3 Now plug 3 into either original equation which will be:
y=4
Make sense?

So show us your work and we can tell you where you went wrong.
Just add the two equations and solve for x

Solve by elimination:

Add these two equations to "eliminate" the y.
---------------
Divide both sides by 3.
Substitute this into either one of the given equations to find the value of y.
Substitute x=3
Subtract 3 from both sides.

The solution is: (3, 4)
You could check this by graphing both of the given equations. The point of intersection point is the solution.
