Question 257708: I have three problems that are factoring
Factoring - Finding GCF
Reverse FOIL (Quadratic - 2 binomials)
8y^3 + 2y - 4y^2
for this one: I got the answer 2y (4y^2+1-2y) please tell me if this is right.
x^2 + 5x +6
for this one: I got the answer (x-1)(x+5) I'm not sure about this one.
y^2 - 4y -12
(y )(y ) This is as far as I got on this one. Please help.
Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let's do the last one first
we want factors of 12 that add up to 4 or have a difference of 4
since both -4y qnd -12 are negative the difference has to be 4
If they were both negative then the 12 would be +12
1,12
6,2
3,4
6 and 2
so the 6 is - and the 2 is plus
(x-6)(x+2)
(y-6) (y+2)
the first one is right
You aren't even close on the second one
-1*5 doesn't=6
we need factors of 6 that add up to 5
both positive
BTW the website rules say
one problem per submission - one rule broken
no similar problems- two rules broken
also a limit of 4 submission/problems daily
