Angela drove 100 miles to Batonsville at an average speed of 50 mph. She then increased her average speed by 20 percent and drove 30 miles to Catonsville. What was her average speed for the entire journey, miles per hour?
------------------
To Batonsville DATA:
distance = 100 miles; rate = 50 mph ; time = 2 hrs.
-------------------------
Bat to Cat DATA:
distance = 30 miles ; rate = 1.2*50 = 60 mph ; time = 30/60 = 1/2 hr
---------------------------
Total trip DATA:
distance = 130 miles ; time = 2 1/2 hrs
Equation:
rate = d/t = 130/(5/2) = 260/5 = 52 mph
