Question 192222: i was not sure this is the problem, Edna and Nancy leave the same house at the same time and walk for four hours. Edna walks due east at the average rate of 4 kilometers per hour and Nancy walks due north at the average rate of 3 kilometers per hour. What is the straight line distance between them, in kilometers, at the end of the 4 hours?

If one person goes due east at 4 km/hr, and the other is going north at 3 km/hr, after 4 hours the one going east will be 16 km from the starting point (4 km/hr X 4 hours = 16 km) and the other will be 12 km from the starting point. Furthermore, since North and East are 90 degrees apart, the two paths traveled will form the legs of a right triangle.

Now you could do this in your head by noticing that the legs of the right triangle are in proportion 3:4 and remembering that 3-4-5 is a Pythagorean Triple, so the hypotenuse must be a multiple of 5, namely 5 times the number of hours walked, hence 20 km.

Or you could use Pythagoras' Theorem:
