Question 1166108: After a sailboat had been on the water for 2 h. A change in the wind direction reduced the average speed of the boat by 2 mph. The entire distance sailed was 60 mi. The total time spent sailing was 4 h. How far did the sailboat travel in the first 2h?
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x is the speed in first two hours, so 2x is the distance
x-2 is speed for next 2 hours so 2x-4 is the distance
Those add to 60 miles
so 4x-4=60
4x=64
x=16 miles per hour so 32 miles in the first two hours ANSWER
last two hours is at 14 miles per hour or 28 miles
In the first two hours, the boat traveled 32 miles. Then the wind caused the speed of the boat to be reduced to 14 mph, so for the next two hours, the boat went 28 miles.
That is 60 miles.
The answer to the question is 32 miles and it was going at 16 mph during that time.
