x, amount SPENT on cheese
y, the cost of everything customer buys plus anything else

According to the equation and based on the description ("Spends $75 on sliced cheese"), .

NOTHING in the description showed anything about POUNDS of cheese or PRICE based on pounds. Only that "spent $75 on cheese".

None of the answer choices matches the described problem.

If he spends $75 on cheese and he buys x pounds of cheese, the formula for the cost per pound of the cheese is y = 75/x.

The $1 he donates to charity has nothing to do with the cost of the cheese. The problem says the $75 was spent on cheese. The $1 is IN ADDITION TO the $75, it is NOT PART OF that $75.

After reading this absurdist post, I have a question:

does a customer just want to donate, or he just donated ?

Do you feel the difference ?

Also, my impression is that the person who created this "problem", never in his (or her) life saw or read regular Math problem in a textbook.

Absolute and total mathematical illiteracy . . .
