a quarter-pound burger has a diameter of 4 inches, what is the diameter of the half-pound burger?
---------------------
Assuming density and thickness are constant:
weight is a function of the square of the diameter.
----
b = diameter of the Big burger
s = diameter of the Small burger
--------
b^2 = 2s^2 = 2*16 = 32
b = sqrt(32) = 4*sqrt(2) inches

The problem is carelessly presented. I don't care to provide a response when I don't know what the question really is.

(1) "burger" usually means the whole sandwich, possibly with trimmings. This problem probably is talking only about the meat patty for the burger. The statement of the problem should make that clear.

(2) The meat patty is a 3-dimensional object. Are we supposed to assume that the half pound patty is similar to the quarter pound patty, meaning that the half pound patty is not only wider but also thicker than the quarter pound patty? In reality the half pound patty is probably the same thickness as the quarter pound patty.

Of course the answer to the question will be different with the two different interpretations.

The mathematical concept this problem is supposed to teach is obvious. It is unfortunate that the author of the problem was so careless....
