a = the original price

b = the discount price.

c = the additional discount price.

the discount price is equal to the retail price minus 20%.

that would be a - .20 * a = .8 * a.

therefore b = .8 * a.

the additional discount price is equal to the discount price minus 10%.

that would be b - .1 * b = .9 * b.

therefore c = .9 * b.

since c = .9 * b and b = .8 * a, then c = .9 * .8 * a which makes c = .72 * a.

since you ended up paying $792, then .72 * a = $792.

solve for a to get a = $792 / .72 = $1100.

the original price was $1100.

20% discount off $1100 = $220, resulting in a discount price of $880.

additional discount of 10% off $880 results in a final discount price of $880 - $88 = $792.
