i would say they are independent of each other.

they are not mutually exclusive, however.

i know of no requirement for a student studying history that requires that student to study french at the same time, or for a student studying french that requires that student to study history at the same time, at least at the undergraduate level.

the decision is up to each student individually and their decision to study history is independent of their decision to study french.

the only time it might become a requirement is if the student is majoring in french history and will need to be able to translate history texts written in french.

that's a special case that only occurs when the student is specializing in a unique area of study, and most likely doesn't occur until the student is in post-graduate study.

in general, you can probably assume that it is not the case, and that the events are independent of each other, which means that, whether the student studies history is not dependent on whether the student studies french, and vice versa.
