Let "x" be the number of rolls bought.

Then the number of bagels is (144-x).

Don spent 37*x cents for the rolls and 62*(144-x) cents for bagels.


The "value" equation is 

37x + 62(144-x) = 6978   cents.


Simplify and solve it for x"

37x + 8928 - 62x = 6978,

-25x = 6878 - 8928  --->  -25x = - 1950  --->  x =  = 78 bagels.


Now the number of rolls is 144 - 78 = 66.
