(86 + 50) / 2 = 136/2 = 68.

this assumes you had only two tests, so they are weighted equally.

assume you have 4 quizes that averaged 86 and then you get a 50 on the fifth quiz.

you new average would then be ((4 * 86) + 50) / 5 = 78.8.

you have to go by the weighting factor.

if your relative weighting is 50% for the 86 and 50% for the 50, then .5 * 86 + .5 * 50 = 68.

if your relative weighting is 80% for the 86 and 20% for the 50, then .8 * 86 + .2 * 50 = 78.8.

figure the sum of your relative weights has to be equal to 100%.

most class scores give percentage weighting to individual test, class participation, and semi-final test and final test.

it depends on what your instructor's policy is.

an example of a fictitious scenario would be:

10% class participation.
10% for each of 5 quizes.
15% for the semi-final
25% for the final.

the total percent = 100%.
10% for class participation
50% for total of 5 quizes
15% for semi-final
25% for final.

total = 100%.

it's not just a simple matter of taking the average of 86% and 50%.

if you only had 2 tests, then so far you would be averaging 68% based on those two tests only, if those two tests carried the same weight.
