An average is a way to compute, from a group of numbers, what would a "typical" number be. For example, we can talk about "the average height of six graders in Boondock county".
Normally, average is computed as the sum of numbers, divided by their quantity.
Mathematicians also like to write it using the sum symbol  , like this:
