Question 98610: hi and thanks for taking time out to read my problem...
It says: two angles are complementry. The measures of one angle is 21 more than twice the measure of the other angle. Find the measure of the angle.
i tried it a few times but just don't remeber how to do it...my teacher went over it in class but i might have took my notes wrong or didn't right it done...

two angles are complementry. The measures of one angle is 21 more than twice the measure of the other angle. Find the measure of the angle.
------------
Let one of the angles be "x".
The other angle is "90-x".
EQUATION
90-x = 2x+21
90-x = 2x+21
3x = 69
x=23 (one of the angles)
90-x = 67 (the other angle)

Let x=angle 1, y=angle 2

Since one angle (say angle 2) is 21 more (ie add 21) than twice (2 times) the other angle, we get

Now add the angles x and y to get 90 degrees (remember two complementary angles add up to 90 degrees)

Plug in

Subtract 21 from both sides

Combine like terms on the right side

Divide both sides by 3 to isolate x

Divide

--------------------------------------------------------------
Answer:
So our angle is

Now plug in to find y

Multiply

Add

So the other angle is

So the two angles are 23 and 67 degrees

Check:

Add up the angles, the left side should add up to the right side

Since the equation is true, our answer is verified

2 COMPLEMENTARY ANGLES ADD UP TO 90 DEGREES.
THEREFORE:
X+(21+2X)=90
X+21+2X=90
3X=90-21
3X=69
X=69/3
X=23 ANSWER.
90-23=67 ANSWER
PROOF
23+21+2*23=90
23+21+46=90
90=90
