Complementary angles always add to 90 degrees. So if x and 90-x are complementary, then they add to 90. Let's check that
x+(90-x) = 90
x+90-x = 90
x-x+90 = 90
0x+90 = 90
0+90 = 90
90 = 90 ... which is always true
