Question 859035: Find the value of y and the measure of each angle labeled in the figure. The figure is a triangle that measures (3y+18degrees) and (y+2degrees)
Answer by Awesom3guy(31) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
All angles of a triangle add up to 180°.
You can use this knowledge to the angles and y is you knew the numerical measure of the THIRD angle. You have to tell us that too.
If the third angle is shown, the equation you would have to set up is:
(3y+18) + (y+2) + A = 180°
Where A is the measure of the third angle.
Then you collect the like terms:
4y+20+A=180
You subtract 20 and A from 180 as they are both known numbers.
4y=180-20-A
And you divide with 4 to get the value of y.
y=(180-20-A)/4
My only guess is that the triangle is a right one, so the third angle is 90° degrees and you didn't mention. In that case,
y=(180-20-90)/4 = 17.5
y = 17.5.
And then you find each of the angles by plugging in the value for y in their expression. If y is 17.5, then e.g. the angle 3y+18degrees is
3*17.5 + 18 = 70.5°.
Do the same for the other.
Either way, I hope that helps.
