Let the angle = x
It's complement is whatever angle added to it equals 90 degrees.
Let the complement = y
x+y=90
x is 40 less than two thirds its complement
x = 2/3y-40
plug that value for x into the equation
2/3y-40+y=90
multiply the whole equation by 3 to get rid of the fraction
3(2/3y-40+y=90) = 2y-120+3y=270
5y-120=270
5y=390
y=78
x+78=90
x=12
answer: the angle is 12 degrees
