2 angles are complementary.
That means the 2 angles sum to 90 degrees.

x = one angle
y = complementary angle
x + y = 90
so
x = 90-y
.
x + 1/2y = 72
.
substitute for 'x'
.
90-y +1/2y = 72
-1/2y = -18
y = 36
.
x = 90-36 = 54
.
Does x + 1/2y = 72?
54 + 18 = 72
OK.
