Question 493069: I have a diagram that looks like an x but with a horizontal line through it. The top right (split by the horizontal line) angle is 5x+4. The bottom right is 3x-24. The very bottom is 2y. On the left the bottom split angle is 2y. Can you please help me I really don't understand what I am doing. I know that I have to solve for the variables, but I am totally an algebra person and don't really do well with diagrams. I tried making the 3x-24=114 and got 46 for my answer, then I put 46 in for x on 5x+4 and got 234. Please help! I really am lost, please and very thank you!!!!
Answer by cleomenius(959) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It sounds as if the two angles on the top right are adjacent angles that combine to form a straight line of 180 degrees, they are supplementary.
5x +4 + 3x - 24 = 180
8x -20 = 180
8x = 200
x = 25
5(25) + 4 = `129 degrees
3(25) -24 = 51 degrees
129 degrees + 51 degrees = 180 degrees.
This does check.

The second part with the y variable is not clear, if you could describe it better we could try to work out an answer.
