the meausure of an angle is 20 more than 3 times the meausure of its supplement. What is the smaller angle?
the supplementary angles add up to 180 degrees
so the equation will be set up like so
3x+20+x=180
combine like terms
4x+20=180
subtract 20 from both sides of the equation
4x+20-20=180-20
equals
4x=160
you then divide 4 from both sides of the equation
4x/4=160/4
solve for x
x=40
so the smaller angle is 40 degrees
if u were lookin for the measure of the bigger angle as well you would just subtract the smaller angle by 180 and then u would have the bigger angle as well
