Question 360692: "The sum of two angles is 130. Four times the complement of the first angle added to the supplement of the second angleis equal to 460. Find both angles."
i know the <1=50 and <2=80, but i dont know how to show work for my answers
Answer by jrfrunner(365) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let X = angle 1
let Y = angle 2
complement of X: 90-x
supplement of Y: 180-y
--
given
X+Y=130
4*(90-x)+180-y=460
--
simplify the second equation
360-4x+180-y=460
540-4x-y=460
540-460=4x+y
80=4x+y
--
since 80=4x+y=3x+(x+y) and x+y=130
then 80=3x+130
and 80-130=3x
-50=3x
this is nonsense!!!!
==
you did not specify something correctly, because you end up with a negative angle
===
In your response you said the it should state
The sum of two angles is 130. Four times the complement of the first angle added to the three times the supplement of the second angleis equal to 460. Find both angles
--
in this case your two equations are
x+y=130
4*(90-x)+3(180-y)=460
--
simplify the second equation
360-4x+540-3y=460
900-4x-3y=460
900-460=4x+3y
440=x+3(x+y)
440=x+3(130) since x+y=130 as given
440-390=x
50=x
and since x+y=130 then y=130-x=130-50=80
