five times the complement of an angle less than twice the angles supplement is 30 degrees.
Find the measure of the supplement.
:
let a = "an angle"
we know
(90-a) = it's complement
and
180-a) = it's supplement
:
Write an equation for the statement:
"five times the complement of an angle less than twice the angles supplement is 30 degrees. "
5(90-a) - 2(180-a) = 30
450 - 5a - 360 + 2a = 30
-5a + 2a + 450 - 360 = 30
-3a + 90 = 30
-3a = 30 - 90
-3a = -60
a =
a = +20 degrees is the angle
but it says:
"Find the measure of it's supplement"
180 - 20 = 160 degrees
:
:
Check this in the statement:
five times the complement of an angle less than twice the angles supplement is 30 degrees.
5(90-20) - 2(160) = 30
350 - 320 = 30; confirms our solutions
