Question 242281: I have an isosceles triangle with the top angle given as 3x-48 and then the base of the triangle, with both angles equal and no measure given, but one side of the base of the triangle is extented out with the measurement of 9x. (showing supplement) But I can not find x with just that information. Is something missing or how do I go about solving this?

the supplement of ANY angle of a triangle equals the sum of the other two angles
___ (because all 3 added together equal 180º)

9x = 180 - 9x + 3x - 48

If the supplement to the base angle is 9x, then the each of the base angles is 180-9x.

Therefore, the SUM of these THREE angles is 180.

3x-48+180-9x+180-9x=180
-15x+360-48=180
-15x+312=180
-15x=180-312
-15x--132
x=132/15=44/5= 8.8 degrees
3x=26.4
3x-48 = NEGATIVE ANGLE = the angle at the top

NOTE: I have checked and re-checked this problem, and I don't see anything wrong. I conclude that there is NO SOLUTION to the triangle. That is, unless I have misinterpreted the picture.
