Question 1092298: I am installing a one-sided pitched roof that faces south on a 4X4 meter room on the flat roof of a house. The best angle of the roof for solar collection is 33 degrees. The 2 southernmost columns supporting the roof are 2.3 meters high. My question is, how high do the northernmost columns have to be to achieve the 33 degree pitch? The distance between the columns is 4 meters.

if you want to work to the nearest centimeters, then all measurements need to be rounded to 2 decimal places.
your solar panels form a right triangle with the horizontal roof.
x is the vertical length of the triangle.
4 is the horizontal length of the triangle.
if you want the solar panels to be 33 degrees from the horizontal roof, you need to use the following formula.
tan(33) = opposite / adjacent = x/4.
solve for x to get x = 4 * tan(33) = 2.6 meters rounded to the nearest centimeter.
your solar panels form a 33 degree angle to the horizontal roof.
the horizontal side of this right triangle is 4 meters long and the vertical side is 2.6 meters long.
to get the dimensions of the high column, you may need to add the thickness of the roof to the measurements.

it's whatever you think you need to add to the overall dimensions.
if low column length is 2.3 meters and thickness of roof is y meters, than the length of the high column would need to be 2.3 + 2.6 + y.
