equilateral, equi-lateral means equal sides. In the case of the triangle, it also means equal angles. The angles of EVERY triangle add up to 180 degrees, and if you divide 180/3 = 60 you find the degrees of the angles in an equilateral triangle, 60 degrees.

You can construct an equilateral triangle, and then any EXTENDED side of the triangle will form a  EXTERNAL angle. Is this what you seek?
