x = 3y - 16,   (1)   (from the condition)
x + y = 180.   (2)   (since the angles X and Y are supplementary, as the consequence angles of the parallelogram).

Substitute x = 3y - 16 (from (1) into (2). You will get a single equation for y

(3y - 16) + y = 180.

Simplify and solve:

4y = 180 + 16 = 196,

y =  = 49.

Thus y = 49 degrees, x = 180 - y = 180 - 49 = 131 degrees.
