Question 81508: write the eepression as a complex number in standard form (5 + 4i) + (-7 +9i)
Answer by mathdoc316(9) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
This is similar to simplifying an expression with x as a symbol or variable.
Here i is the imaginary unit, the square root of -1!
The complex numbers can be thought of as points in the complex plane. The horizontal axis looks like the x axis and it plots the "real" part of the complex number. The vertical axis looks like the y axis and plots the "imaginary" part of the complex number. So to plot a complex number like 5 + 4i you can think of the point (5,4) on the complex plane.
But all you have to do here is combine the real parts, and combine the imaginary parts
That is standard form - the standard form looks like where a and b are real numbers.
