Answer by rapaljer(4671) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I'm not sure what you are doing here, but let me take a guess at it. Are you factoring this trinomial: ?
If this is the problem, FACTORING is a MAJOR problem for many students in algebra from Algebra I to College Algebra. In your problem, you are factoring a trinomial into the product of two binomials that will look like this:
You need to find two numbers whose product is the LAST term (that would be 4!), that add up to the middle term (which is also 4!). This can be done with 2*2, so it looks like this:
For additional explanations, please see my Lesson Plans in algebra.com, or go to my website by clicking on my tutor name anywhere in algebra.com, then look for "Math in Living Color," then "Basic Algebra," then "Chapter 2," and look for various sections pertaining to Factoring, especially "Trinomial Factoring." You may also want to look on my main page for the link that is called "Basic Algebra," then "Samples from Basic Algebra: One Step at a Time," and "Chapter 2," looking for several topics that relate to factoring.
I hope this is helpful.
