i am given the y=-1/2x +6 and y= -x + 8
where do the equations come from?
I can do the scatter polt and I understand about residuals.
if the equations are from the trend lines-- how are they derived.

I think you have mixed a couple of unrelated problems together here. The two equations that you gave have no discernable relationship to the set of points or to the actual trend line that would come from a proper regression analysis of the given data.

FYI, the trend line, which has an of a whopping 0.0154, is , so says my graphing program and so says Excel.

The other tutor obviously doesn't know linear algebra. He thought you
were taking stats.

Find the regression line for your 4 points using that method.

Then take the two other equations with this regression equation and 
find the linear regression of the three equations just like this video:
