Question 70525: Please help me understand this problem
Solve and write interval notation for the solution set
2x-3 less than or equal to -5 or 2x+1 greater than or equal to 2
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2x-3 less than or equal to -5
or
2x+1 greater than or equal to 2
-------------
Rewrite as:
2x-3<=-5
or
2x+1>=2
----------
Solve each one for "x":
2x-3<=-5
Add 3 to both sides to get:
2x<=-2
Divide both sides by 2 to get:
x<=-1
OR
2x+1>=2
Subtract 1 from both sides to get:
2x>=1
Divide both sides by 2 to get:
x>=1/2
-------------
You end up with x<=-1 OR x>=1/2
Putting that in interval notation you have:
(-inf,-1] OR [1/2,inf)
