slope -3; through (1,-4)
-------------
Use y = mx + b and the point to find b
-4 = -3*1 + b
b = -1
------
Then it's y = -3x - 1
Or,
3x + y = -1

Keep going to get

y+4=-3(x-1)

y = -3(x-1)-4

y = -3x + 3 - 4

y = -3x - 1

It is not wrong, per se. It probably just isn't in the desired form. Try slope-intercept: Solve for in terms of everything else so that it looks like . If that doesn't work, try standard form. Arrange it to look like
