A silversmith has two alloys, one containing 70% silver and the other 30% silver. How much of each should be melted and combined to obtain 100 grams of an alloy containing 54% silver?
------
Equation:
silver + silver = silver
0.70x + 0.30*(100-x) = 0.54*100
----
Multiply thru by 100 to get:
70x + 30*100 - 30x = 54*100
40x = 14*100
x = 35 grams(amt. of 70% alloy needed)
----
100-35 = 65 grams (amt. of 30% alloy needed)
---
