the discriminant can be either negative, zero or positive.

If positive, it means there are 2 roots. The curve cuts the x-axis at 2 points.

If zero, it means there is just 1 root. The turning point in the curve just touches the x-axis.

If negative, it means there are no solutions (as far as basic algebra courses are concerned). The curve does not cross or touch the x-axis.
