2x+y=6
3x+5y=9

As it's easiest to solve for y in eq (i), we do just that to get: y = - 2x + 6

We now substitute this value, - 2x + 6 for y in eq (ii) to get: 3x + 5(- 2x + 6) = 9

3x - 10x + 30 = 9

- 7x = - 21

Substitute 3 for x in eq (i), 3x + 5y = 9 to get: 3(3) + 5y = 9

9 + 5y = 9
