a piece of wire 42 cm long is bent into the shape of a rectangle whose width is twice its length. find the dimensions of the rectangle.
.
Let x = length
then because: "width is twice its length"
2x = width
.
Perimeter of ANY rectangle is:
2(length) + 2(width)
Or, in our case (plugging in our variables):
2x + 2(2x)
.
Finally, since we had "a piece of wire 42 cm long" we get the formula of:
2x + 2(2x) = 42
2x + 4x = 42
6x = 42
x = 7 cm (length)
2x = 2(7) = 14 cm (width)
