Let M = the initial amount
Amount spent at first store + parking = (3/5)M + 2
The amount remaining is M - [(3/5)M + 2] = (2/5)M - 2
1/3 of this was spent at the 2nd store, and the amount remaining was $12:
(2/5)M - 2 - (1/3)*( (2/5)M - 2 ) = 12
Solve for M:
(4/15)M - (4/3) = 12
M = (40/3)*(15/4) = $50
Check:
1st store + parking (3/5)*50 + 2 = $32
50 - 32 = 18 left
18 - (1/3)18 = 12
