Answer by Boreal(15235)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2x+3y=8
3x+2y=612
multiply top by 3 and bottom by -2 to eliminate x
6x+9y=24
-6x-4y=-1224
5y=-1200
y=-240
get x from first
2x-720=8
2x=728
x=364
check in second
1092-480=612
checks
(364, -240)

Answer by htmentor(1343)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2x+3y=8 [1]
3x+2y=612 [2]
If we multiply [1] by 3/2 and subtract it from [2] we are left with:
(-5/2)y = 600
y = -240
Substitute back into either [1] or [2] to get x:
2x + 3(-240) = 8
x = (8 + 720)/2 = 364
x = 364, y = -240
